Hey fellas, good episode. I love classic old-time movies! In fact, I’m leaving soon to go to a “classic old movie” film convention.
Anyway, here’s my list. Now these are classics in my book. Not “Gone with the Wind” classic but movies that I think are fun, hold a lot of nostalgia for me, and I can watch over and over.
1. King Kong (1933) This started it all for me. My dad used to show me his 16mm print all the time when I was a kid. Amazing movie. Sorry, but even though I enjoyed it, Jackson’s remake can’t touch this.
2. Babes in Toyland (1934) One of my favorite Laurel and Hardy features. It’s got heavy rotation in the public domain world of dvd but you need to see the uncut, un-colorized version of this.
3. Murder He Says (1945) Fred McMurray stars in this hilarious old dark house comedy with hillbillies.
4. The Wizard of Oz (1939) Amazing!
5. The Cat and the Canary (1939) This is the Bob Hope version. My favorite comedian doing my favorite genre (old-dark house mysteries). It’s a close tie with “The Ghost Breakers”.
Bonus: Topper Returns (1941) A sequel to Topper with Cary Grant. This is a blast…a murder mystery and comedy all rolled up into one with the hot Joan Blondell and Eddie Rochester Anderson. Produced by Hal Roach…basically if Hal Roach’s name is on it I love it.
I like everyone’s picks.
Craig, when it comes to Goodbye, Mr. Chips, I really liked the 1939 version. I need to see the other one to compare.
Talk to you later!
